Adblue: What is it and what is it is purpose?

If you have a diesel car that was built after 2015, it’s likely to need AdBlue.

The AdBlue is still unknown to some drivers, but owners of modern diesel cars with engines that meet the Euro 6 standard are already familiarized with it .

Do you know what the famous ADblue liquid is for?

AdBlue is a non-toxic, colorless, odorless and non-flammable liquid used to reduce nitrous oxide emissions from diesel engines and consists of a mixture of urea and deionized water that is sprayed into the exhaust system.

Without this liquid, it would be much more difficult to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from diesel cars and make them meet the latest standards.

It is important to note that this is an exhaust fluid and not a fuel additive.

It is stored in a separate reservoir and is fueled by a blue (usually) filling cap, located next to the fuel tank, in the trunk or under the hood.

Is a trade name registered by the Association of German Car Manufacturers and the most recognized form of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF).

 

What is AdBlue made of?

As explained in the previous chapter, AdBlue is a colorless-looking non-toxic liquid and is essentially a solution of water and urea.

The urea present in this fluid is exceptionally pure much more than used in cosmetics, glues or fertilizers. Similarly, water is demineralized, which makes it much cleaner for impurities.

When purchasing this product, make sure it meets the correct specifications by looking for the ISO number 22241 on the packaging. It may also appear as ISO-22241-1, ISO-22241-2, ISO-22241-3.

Doing so will ensure that AdBlue does not damage your car’s SCR catalyst.

 

 

What is AdBlue used for and why is it so necessary?

Car manufacturers are governed by several rules, and most of these are driven by environmental concerns.

The latest emissions regulations, referred to as Euro 6, were proposed in 2014 and became mandatory in 2016. It has created a challenge in the development of diesel engines.

Thus, it has become imperative to find ways to minimize emissions of polluting gases into the atmosphere.

The technology used is called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and involves the injection of precise amounts of a liquid into the vehicle’s exhaust gases to produce a chemical reaction that neutralizes harmful emissions.

 

How long does it last or AdBlue?

The rate of use of AdBlue depends on the engine, your driving style and the routes you usually take.

As a rule, a car consumes between 1 and 2.5 liters per a thousand kilometers.

 

What happens if I run out of AdBlue?

If you run out of AdBlue while driving, engine power and performance will be reduced to limit emissions of polluting gases.

When it stops, you won’t be able to restart the engine until you fill up with this liquid.

Just like you do with fuel, your car will warn you when the tank is running low.

Everyone is able to fill the car with AdBlue?

On several diesel models, the AdBlue depot is located near the car’s fuel tank. It is usually smaller than the main fuel filler and will have a blue cap that confirm that it should only be used for this fluid.

Does AdBlue affect fuel consumption?

As AdBlue is an exhaust additive. It does not have a direct impact on combustion and fuel consumption. If saving fuel is a concern for you, rest assured that there is no evidence that AdBlue affects diesel consumption.
