Channel Support Systems guide

What is a channel support system?

Channel support systems are used to carry building services such as cables, pipework, ducting, or anything else that needs to be supported and kept out of the way. Channel support systems can be used to suspend services from ceilings, walls, or on rooftops and below the flooring. Support systems consist of a range of component parts such as channels, brackets, and nuts, which can be assembled in an almost unlimited range of configurations.

What are the channel support components?

The framework is built up from various components which allow you to achieve pretty much any layout you desire. The most basic parts of a channel support system are plain and slotted channel in various lengths and cross sections, channel brackets in different angles and sizes, and the fixings or channel nuts to connect everything together.

Channel lengths

Channel lengths usually come in standard 3m and 6m lengths but can also be provided cut to size for swifter construction on-site. There is a wide range of profiles available for different applications. Standard sizes are usually 41 x 21mm and 41 x 41mm single or back-to-back channel, although larger sizes are available such as 41 x 62mm and 41 x 83mm. There are also heavy-duty and ultra-lightweight options and most types come as either plain or slotted, which has pre-cut slots for faster fixing. Depending upon the desired finish channel lengths are offered in pre-galvanised, hot-dip galvanised or stainless steel.

 

Channel brackets

Connecting up the channel lengths requires a range of bracketry which includes everything from straight flat connectors to a selection of different angled brackets, base plates, beam clamps, and bracing brackets.

 

Fixings (square plates and channel nuts)

Fixing all this together involves using channel nuts. These are specifically designed for the channels. Plain nuts are inserted and turned 90 degrees to fix in place. Alternatively, spring channel nuts hold the nut in place and make assembly less fiddly. Square and lipped plates are also available to suit various sized bolts or threaded rod.

 

Use channel with feet for frames (H frames)

Channel support systems are often mounted on ceilings, walls or floors. However, it is also possible to create free-standing support systems by using rubber support feet and channel lengths to construct simple H frames or even more complicated frame designs. For example, a series of H frames will typically be used on rooftops to support building services where it is not permitted to drill into the roof to gain a fixing. This protects the integrity of the roof membrane and prevents unwanted leaks.

What are the common uses for channel support systems?

Typically used for electrical cabling systems, HVAC ducting, plumbing, and other pipework. It can also be used to create lightweight storage systems, tool or equipment racks, workbench supports, or to lift anything up and out of the way which might otherwise occupy valuable floor space.
