With any tool guide we like to include a buyer’s guide. We find that it makes it helpful for any beginner to better understand the product. Coping saws are not a typical everyday tool found in garages and sheds throughout the UK. It is a saw mainly used by carpenters, those who do a lot of woodwork and many joiners and cabinet makers.

What is a coping saw used for?

According to Wikipedia, “A coping saw is a type of bow saw used to cut intricate external shapes and interior cut-outs in woodworking or carpentry.” It is often confused with a fret saw, which is a much finer cutting saw. A coping saw has some type of hardened steel blade. That blade is stretched between two ends of a steel frame. A handle, usually a wooden one is attached to this frame.

There are usually two adjustment screws or pins, one at each end of the steel frame, where the blade is attached. This allows the blade to be adjusted, loosened, tightened or replaced. Cheaper coping saws use the handle to loosed and tighten the blade by screwing the handle in and out.

Coping saws are used by carpenters to create coped joints, and by woodworkers to create curved shapes and to finish the bottom of dovetail joints. They are also used to cut dowels flush and for finishing coping joints on coving.

Best Coping Saw Blades

There is no doubt that the biggest complaint with coping saws is that the blades break too easy. The main reason for that is user error. People tend to want to get the cutting done quickly, and they push too hard on a very thin blade. Some users also over tension the blade, so just be aware of that.

That said, not all blades are made equally. We did our usual research, and according to online buyers, the Eclipse branded coping saw blades are the best. Coping saws should be used gently and don’t use one if you are in a hurry is our advice.

Almost all coping saw blades are a standard length of around 175mm. Sometimes you will see measurements such as 165mm but the reality is that the coping saw frame is pretty flexible so small adjustments are easy to do.

These come in a pack of 10 so good value from money as these work out at around 59p per blade.
